The meaning of “makan” in Bahasa Indonesia is eating and “sutra” is Sanskrit.
Its recommendations were culled from tediously selected teams of ambrosia devotees fondly called Makanmatas (food police). At any time, there are about 35 of them, from all races and walks of life. Every dish recommended has to be filtered through their exacting standards with at least three Makanmatas conferring their highest award before it is recommended.
Through our food bible Makansutra, we share with unabashed frankness with our unbiased rating system of chopsticks - one chopstick (a pair) for "good" to three for "die, die must try". The information and little snippets about enjoyable eating in Singapore are as it is and in-your-face and without the influence of the food and beverage advertising dollar. Our Makanmatas now work, we mean eat, undercover for Makansutra. Not a tough job for these fussy taste-buddies whose gastronomic desires are simply to ensure that their favourite food, from prata to pasta, will always be good, affordable and enjoyable.
